§ 12.505 Examination requirements. (a) Before an applicant is issued an endorsement as QMED in the rating of oiler, fireman/watertender, junior engineer, pumpman/machinist, or electrician/refrigerating engineer, he or she must prove, to the satisfaction of the Coast Guard, by oral or other means of examination, his or her knowledge of the subjects listed in paragraph (c) of this section. (b) The examination, whether administered orally or by other means, must be conducted only in the English language. (c) Table 1 to § 12.505(c) provides a list of subjects required. § 182.100 Intent. This part contains requirements for the design, construction, installation, and operation of propulsion and auxiliary machinery, piping and pressure systems, steering apparatus, and associated safety systems. Machinery and equipment installed on each vessel must be suitable for the vessel and its operation and for the purpose intended. All machinery and equipment must be installed and maintained in such a manner as to afford adequate protection from causing fire, explosion, machinery failure, and personnel injury.

§ 182.310 Installations. (a) Auxiliary machinery of the internal combustion piston type must comply with the provisions of this part. (b) Auxiliary machinery of the steam or gas turbine type will be given separate consideration and must meet the applicable requirements of subchapter F (Marine Engineering) of this chapter as determined necessary by the cognizant OCMI. (c) Auxiliary boilers and heating boilers and their associated piping and fittings will be given separate consideration and must meet the applicable requirements of subchapter F (Marine Engineering) of this chapter as determined necessary by the cognizant OCMI, except that heating boilers must be tested or examined every three years.

§ 56.50-80 -80 Lubricating-oil systems. (a) The lubricating oil system must be designed to function satisfactorily when the vessel has a permanent 15° list and a permanent 5° trim. See § 58.01-40 of this subchapter for operational requirements for propulsion and vital machinery at vessel angles of inclination. (b) When pressure or gravity-forced lubrication is employed for the main propelling machinery, an independent auxiliary lubricating pump must be provided. (c) Oil coolers must be provided with two separate means of circulating water through the coolers. (d) For internal combustion engine installations, the requirements of paragraphs (b) and (c) of this section do not apply to vessels in river and harbor service, nor to any vessel below 300 gross tons.
