USCG Exam Practice · Rule 13 — Overtaking

You are the overtaking vessel and, after beginning your pass, the bearing between your vessel and the vessel being overtaken changes such that the other vessel now appears on your bow. Under the Inland Rules, what is your obligation?

  1. AYou become the give-way vessel under the crossing rules and must yield accordingly.
  2. BYou become the stand-on vessel because the other vessel is now crossing ahead of you.
  3. CYou remain obligated to keep clear of the overtaken vessel until you are finally past and clear.✓ correct
  4. DThe situation reverts to a head-on encounter and both vessels must alter to starboard.

Why C is correct

33 CFR §83.13(d) states that any subsequent alteration of the bearing between the two vessels shall not make the overtaking vessel a crossing vessel or relieve her of the duty of keeping clear until she is finally past and clear.
