Under the Inland Navigation Rules, when two power-driven vessels are meeting on reciprocal courses so as to involve risk of collision, each vessel shall:

  1. AAlter course to starboard so that each passes on the port side of the other✓ correct

  3. CReduce speed and sound one prolonged blast
  4. DMaintain course and speed until the other vessel maneuvers

Why A is correct

33 CFR §83.14(a) requires each vessel in a head-on situation to alter course to starboard so that each shall pass on the port side of the other. This is a mutual obligation on both vessels.
