USCG Exam Practice · Rule 15 — Crossing Situation

Two power-driven vessels are crossing. Vessel A has Vessel B broad on her port bow. Vessel B has Vessel A broad on her starboard bow. Under Inland Rule 15, which statement is correct?

  1. AVessel A is the give-way vessel because she has Vessel B on her port side
  2. BVessel B is the give-way vessel because she has Vessel A on her starboard side✓ correct
  3. CBoth vessels are give-way vessels because risk of collision exists
  4. DVessel A is the give-way vessel because she is on the port side of Vessel B

Why B is correct

Under 33 CFR §83.15(a), the vessel which has the other on her starboard side is the give-way vessel. Vessel B has Vessel A on her starboard bow, so Vessel B must keep out of the way. Vessel A, having Vessel B on her port side, is the stand-on vessel.
