USCG Exam PracticeThree-bearing fix and cocked-hat triangle

A line of position (LOP) derived from a single bearing observation tells the navigator that the vessel:

  1. Is located somewhere along that line at the time of the observationCorrect
  2. B. Is at the exact point where the bearing line crosses the chart's latitude scale
  3. C. Has a confirmed fix that requires no additional observations
  4. D. Is on a running fix advanced from a previous position

Why A is correct

A single LOP establishes only that the vessel lies somewhere along that line at the moment of observation. A fix requires the intersection of two or more LOPs taken simultaneously. Bowditch Ch. 7 §701.
