USCG Exam PracticeRule 35 — Sound Signals in Restricted Visibility
A vessel aground in restricted visibility is required to sound which combination of signals on the bell?
- A. Rapid ringing of the bell for about 5 seconds only, identical to an anchored vessel.
- ✓ Three separate and distinct strokes on the bell immediately before and after the rapid ringing of the bell, in addition to the anchor bell signal.Correct
- C. One prolonged blast followed by two short blasts on the whistle, with no bell requirement.
- D. Five rapid strokes on the bell immediately before the rapid ringing, with no strokes after.
Why B is correct
33 CFR §83.35(h) requires a vessel aground to give the bell (and if required, gong) signal prescribed in paragraph (g) AND, in addition, give three separate and distinct strokes on the bell immediately before and after the rapid ringing. This three-stroke sequence distinguishes an aground vessel from one merely at anchor.
