USCG Exam PracticeRule 35 — Sound Signals in Restricted Visibility

A vessel of 110 meters in length is at anchor in restricted visibility. After sounding the bell in the forepart of the vessel, what additional action is required, and where must it be performed?

  1. A. Sound the whistle immediately after the bell; the whistle may be sounded from any location.
  2. Sound the gong rapidly for about 5 seconds in the after part of the vessel, immediately after ringing the bell.Correct
  3. C. Ring a second bell in the after part of the vessel for about 5 seconds.
  4. D. No additional action is required; the bell signal alone satisfies the requirement for all vessels at anchor.

Why B is correct

33 CFR §83.35(g) specifies that in a vessel of 100 meters or more in length, the bell shall be sounded in the forepart of the vessel and immediately after the ringing of the bell the gong shall be sounded rapidly for about 5 seconds in the after part of the vessel. The requirement for a gong on vessels of this length is also established by 33 CFR §83.33(a).
