USCG Exam PracticeRunning fix from a single object
A navigator takes a bearing of 045°T to a lighthouse at 0800 and advances that LOP along the DR track. At 0830 a second bearing of 090°T is taken to the same lighthouse. The intersection of the advanced 0800 LOP and the 0830 LOP is labeled on the chart as:
- A. A fix, because two LOPs intersect
- ✓ A running fix, because the first LOP was advanced and the LOPs were not taken simultaneouslyCorrect
- C. A dead reckoning position, because only one object was used
- D. An estimated position, because radar was not used to confirm the bearings
Why B is correct
When the first LOP is advanced along the DR track to the time of the second observation and the two LOPs intersect, the result is a running fix — not a standard fix — because the observations were not simultaneous. (Bowditch Ch. 7 §702)
