USCG Exam PracticeRule 35 — Sound Signals in Restricted Visibility

A vessel of 15 meters in length is at anchor in restricted visibility. Which statement correctly describes her obligations under Inland Rule 35?

  1. A. She must ring the bell rapidly for about 5 seconds at intervals of not more than 1 minute
  2. She is not obliged to give the bell signal but must make some other efficient sound signal at intervals of not more than 2 minutesCorrect
  3. C. She is not obliged to give any sound signal because she is less than 20 meters in length
  4. D. She must sound one prolonged blast at intervals of not more than 2 minutes

Why B is correct

33 CFR §83.35(i) states that a vessel of 12 meters or more but less than 20 meters in length is not obliged to give the bell signals prescribed in paragraphs (g) and (h), but if she does not, she must make some other efficient sound signal at intervals of not more than 2 minutes. She is not exempt from signaling entirely.
