USCG Exam Practice · Rule 27 — NUC and RAM (lights)
A dredge pipeline floating across a navigable channel must display yellow lights at night. Which of the following correctly states the spacing requirement for those yellow lights within the navigable channel?
- ANot more than 10 meters apart where the pipeline crosses a navigable channel✓ correct
- BNot more than 10 meters apart along the entire length of the pipeline
- CApproximately equally spaced with no specific maximum distance stated
- DNot more than 3.5 meters apart where the pipeline crosses a navigable channel
Why A is correct
33 CFR §83.27(d)(iv)(1)(F) states that yellow lights must be not more than 10 meters apart where the pipeline crosses a navigable channel. Where the pipeline does not cross a navigable channel, the lights need only be sufficient in number to clearly show the pipeline's length and course. The 3.5-meter figure refers to the maximum height above water, not spacing.
