USCG Exam Practice · Rule 30 — Anchored and Aground (lights)
Under the Inland Navigation Rules, a pilot vessel engaged on pilotage duty is at anchor. Which lights must she exhibit?
- AThe standard anchor lights prescribed in Rule 30 only
- BTwo all-round lights in a vertical line (upper white, lower red) plus the anchor lights prescribed in Rule 30✓ correct
- CTwo all-round lights in a vertical line (upper white, lower red) plus sidelights and a sternlight
- DA single all-round white light and two all-round red lights in a vertical line
Why B is correct
33 CFR §83.29(a)(i) requires a vessel engaged on pilotage duty to show two all-round lights in a vertical line (upper white, lower red) at or near the masthead. §83.29(a)(iii) further requires that when at anchor she also exhibit the anchor lights prescribed in Rule 30 (§83.30). Sidelights and a sternlight are required only when underway per §83.29(a)(ii).
