USCG Exam Practice · Rule 32 — Sound Signal Definitions
Under the Inland Navigation Rules, two power-driven vessels are in sight of one another and approaching within half a mile. Vessel A sounds one short blast. Vessel B doubts the safety of the proposed maneuver. What action must Vessel B take?
- ASound one short blast in reply and proceed with the maneuver
- BSound two short blasts to propose an alternative maneuver
- CSound at least five short and rapid blasts and take appropriate precautionary action✓ correct
- DSound one prolonged blast and hold course and speed
Why C is correct
33 CFR §83.34(a)(ii) requires that if a vessel doubts the safety of a proposed maneuver, she shall sound the danger signal specified in §83.34(d) — at least five short and rapid blasts — and each vessel shall take appropriate precautionary action until a safe passing agreement is made. Sounding the same signal or an alternative blast without first resolving the doubt is not permitted.
