USCG Exam Practice · Plot true course and distance between two charted points
You take a bearing to a lighthouse and plot an LOP. Thirty minutes later, at a new position, you take a second bearing to the same lighthouse. You advance the first LOP along the DR track to the time of the second bearing. The intersection of the advanced LOP and the second LOP is called what?
- AA fix
- BA dead reckoning position
- CA running fix✓ correct
- DA doubling-the-angle fix
Why C is correct
Bowditch Ch. 7 §702 defines a running fix as a fix obtained when LOPs cannot be taken simultaneously, by advancing the first LOP along the DR track to the time of the second observation. It is less accurate than a fix from simultaneous LOPs.
