A wet exhaust pipe on a small passenger vessel passes through a watertight bulkhead. According to 46 CFR §182.430, how must the watertight integrity of that bulkhead be maintained?
- A. Noncombustible packing must be used in the bulkhead penetration gland
- ✓ The pipe may be welded to a steel or equivalent bulkhead, or fiberglassed to a fiberglass reinforced plastic bulkhead with suitable expansion stress reliefCorrect
- C. A flexible metallic hose section must be installed on each side of the bulkhead penetration
- D. The pipe must be Schedule 80 material at the penetration point and double clamped
Why B is correct
46 CFR §182.430(f) states that a wet exhaust pipe may be welded to a steel or equivalent bulkhead, or a fiberglass wet exhaust pipe may be fiberglassed to a fiberglass reinforced plastic bulkhead, provided suitable arrangements are made to relieve expansion stresses. Noncombustible packing in the gland is the requirement for dry exhaust systems, not wet.
