USCG Exam PracticeBearings, lubrication, and care of machine parts

A tailshaft fitted with oil-lubricated bearings may be exempt from being drawn for examination provided several conditions are met. Which of the following is one of those required conditions?

  1. An analysis of the tailshaft bearing lubricant is performed semiannually to determine bearing material content or the presence of contaminantsCorrect
  2. B. Tailshaft bearing clearance readings are taken annually regardless of drydock schedule
  3. C. The propeller is removed and the taper nondestructively tested every 3 years
  4. D. The inboard seal assemblies are examined once every 5 years

Why A is correct

46 CFR §61.20-17(e)(3) requires that an analysis of the tailshaft bearing lubricant be performed semiannually in accordance with the lubrication system manufacturer's recommendations to determine bearing material content or the presence of other contaminants. Clearance readings and seal examinations are required at each drydock or underwater survey, not annually, and NDT of the taper is required at intervals not exceeding 5 years.
