USCG Exam PracticeMarlinespike seamanship — knots, splices, line care
Before cutting wire rope, the correct procedure is to:
- ✓ Apply seizings on both sides of the intended cut so the strands cannot fly apartCorrect
- B. Unlay the strands back one lay length on each side, then cut the core
- C. Heat the wire at the cut point to soften the steel before cutting
- D. Apply a seizing only on the working end side of the cut to control the bitter end
Why A is correct
Seizings must be applied on both sides of the cut before cutting wire rope so the strands do not unlay and fly apart. Applying a seizing on only one side is insufficient. (NAVEDTRA 14067 §3-4; NAVEDTRA 14343 §8-1)
