USCG Exam PracticeRule 3 — General Definitions

Two vessels are navigating in reduced visibility. Under the Inland Navigation Rules, they are considered to be 'in sight of one another' only when:

  1. A. Each vessel has the other on radar and is tracking her
  2. One vessel can observe the other visuallyCorrect
  3. C. Both vessels have exchanged VHF radio contact
  4. D. The range between them is less than the prevailing visibility distance

Why B is correct

33 CFR §83.03(k) states that vessels shall be deemed to be in sight of one another only when one can be observed visually from the other. Radar contact alone does not constitute being 'in sight.'
