Under the Inland Navigation Rules, a pilot vessel engaged on pilotage duty is at anchor at night. Which lights must she exhibit?

  1. A. Anchor lights only, as prescribed in Rule 30 for a vessel of her length
  2. Two all-round lights in a vertical line (upper white, lower red) plus the anchor lights prescribed in Rule 30Correct
  3. C. Two all-round lights in a vertical line (upper white, lower red) plus sidelights and a sternlight
  4. D. Two all-round lights in a vertical line (upper white, lower red) only; anchor lights are not required for pilot vessels

Why B is correct

33 CFR §83.29(a)(i) requires a pilot vessel on pilotage duty to exhibit two all-round lights in a vertical line (upper white, lower red) at or near the masthead. §83.29(a)(iii) further requires that when at anchor she add the anchor light, lights, or shape prescribed in Rule 30 (§83.30). Sidelights and sternlight are required only when underway per §83.29(a)(ii).
