USCG Exam PracticeRule 13 — Overtaking

You are uncertain whether your vessel is overtaking another vessel or in a crossing situation. Under the Inland Rules, you must:

  1. A. Treat the situation as a crossing situation and determine which vessel is the stand-on vessel.
  2. B. Sound the danger signal and await the other vessel's response before proceeding.
  3. Assume you are overtaking and act accordingly.Correct
  4. D. Reduce speed until the geometry of the situation becomes clear.

Why C is correct

33 CFR §83.13(c) requires that when a vessel is in any doubt as to whether she is overtaking another, she shall assume that this is the case and act accordingly, keeping clear of the vessel ahead.
