USCG Exam PracticeRule 10 — Traffic Separation Schemes

Under Rule 10, when may a vessel normally join or leave a traffic lane?

  1. A. Only by crossing through the separation zone
  2. At the termination of the lane, or from either side at as small an angle to the general direction of traffic flow as practicableCorrect
  3. C. At any point, provided she crosses at right angles to the traffic flow
  4. D. Only at designated entry points marked on the chart

Why B is correct

33 CFR §83.10(b)(iii) states a vessel shall normally join or leave a traffic lane at the termination of the lane, but when joining or leaving from either side shall do so at as small an angle to the general direction of traffic flow as practicable. Crossing at right angles is the requirement for crossing a lane, not joining or leaving it.
