USCG Exam Practice · Anchoring — types, scope, holding ground

A vessel of 110 meters in length is at anchor at night. Beyond the standard anchor lights, what additional requirement applies specifically because of her length?

  1. AShe must display a third all-round white light at the waterline
  2. BShe shall use available working or equivalent lights to illuminate her decks✓ correct
  3. CShe must display two all-round red lights in a vertical line
  4. DShe may substitute a single all-round white light for the two-light arrangement

Why B is correct

33 CFR §83.30(c) states that a vessel of 100 meters or more in length shall use available working or equivalent lights to illuminate her decks. Vessels under 100 m may do so but are not required to. The two all-round red lights apply to vessels aground, not merely at anchor. The single-light option of §83.30(b) applies only to vessels under 50 m.
