USCG Exam Practice · Fire extinguishers — types, ratings, requirements

A recreational vessel of 350 gross tons and more than 65 feet in length does NOT have a fixed fire extinguishing system in the machinery space. Which additional fire extinguishing equipment is required in the machinery space beyond the portable extinguishers mandated by gross tonnage?

  1. AOne 160-B semi-portable fire extinguishing system permanently attached to a bulkhead or deck✓ correct
  2. BTwo 20-B portable extinguishers regardless of engine horsepower
  3. COne 20-B extinguisher per 1,000 BHP only; no semi-portable system is required below 500 gross tons
  4. DA fixed CO2 system designed per 46 CFR part 76, subpart 76.15, is mandatory at this tonnage

Why A is correct

33 CFR §175.320(b)(2)(ii) requires that on recreational vessels of more than 300 gross tons, either one 160-B semi-portable fire extinguishing system must be fitted or a fixed fire extinguishing system must be fitted in the machinery space. Since no fixed system is installed, the 160-B semi-portable is required. Per §175.320(b)(3), its frame must be welded or otherwise permanently attached to a bulkhead or deck.
