USCG Exam Practice · Vessel stability — metacentric height, free surface
A fishing vessel operating north of 42°N latitude between November 15 and April 15 must account for icing in its stability calculations. For a vessel operating north of 66°30'N latitude, what is the minimum assumed ice load on horizontal projected surfaces?
- A3.07 pounds per square foot (15 kg/m²)
- B1.54 pounds per square foot (7.5 kg/m²)
- C6.14 pounds per square foot (30 kg/m²)✓ correct
- D4.60 pounds per square foot (22.5 kg/m²)
Why C is correct
46 CFR §28.550(b)(1) requires that for vessels operating north of 66°30'N latitude, the assumed ice weight on horizontal projected surfaces must be at least 6.14 pounds per square foot (30 kg/m²). The value of 3.07 psf applies to vertical projected surfaces at that latitude, and half-values apply to vessels operating between 42°N and 66°30'N.
