USCG Exam Practice · Rule 24 — Towing and Pushing (lights)

An inconspicuous, partly submerged object being towed is 30 meters in breadth and 80 meters in length. Which lights must it exhibit at night?

  1. AOne all-round white light at or near each end
  2. BFour all-round white lights to mark its length and breadth, and a diamond shape at the aftermost extremity✓ correct
  3. CFour all-round white lights to mark its length and breadth only
  4. DTwo all-round white lights at each end and a diamond shape

Why B is correct

33 CFR §83.24(g)(ii) requires four all-round white lights to mark the length and breadth of an inconspicuous partly submerged object 25 meters or more in breadth. §83.24(g)(iv) additionally requires a diamond shape at or near the aftermost extremity. The object is only 80 meters in length so no additional intermediate lights are required under §83.24(g)(iii).
