USCG Exam PracticeVisual piloting — three-bearing fixes, danger bearings
A line of position (LOP) derived from a single bearing observation tells the navigator that the vessel is located:
- A. At the exact point where the bearing line crosses the chart datum
- ✓ Somewhere along that bearing line at the time of observationCorrect
- C. At the intersection of that bearing line with the DR track
- D. At a distance from the object equal to the bearing angle in nautical miles
Why B is correct
A single LOP establishes only that the vessel lies somewhere along that line at the moment of observation. A fix requires the intersection of two or more LOPs taken simultaneously. (Bowditch Ch. 7 §701)
