USCG Exam PracticeRule 26 — Fishing Vessels (lights)

A vessel engaged in fishing other than trawling has outlying gear extending 200 meters horizontally from the vessel. What additional light or shape must she exhibit?

  1. A. A red all-round light in the direction of the gear
  2. An all-round white light or a cone apex upward in the direction of the gearCorrect
  3. C. An all-round white light or a cone apex downward in the direction of the gear
  4. D. A flashing yellow light in the direction of the gear

Why B is correct

33 CFR §83.26(c)(ii) requires that when outlying gear extends more than 150 meters horizontally from the vessel, an all-round white light or a cone apex upward shall be exhibited in the direction of the gear. The apex-downward cone is associated with a vessel under sail with machinery, not with fishing gear indication.
