USCG Exam Practice · Dead reckoning — DR plot maintenance
A navigator obtains a bearing on a lighthouse at 0900 and cannot obtain a second simultaneous LOP. At 0930 a second bearing is taken on the same lighthouse. To determine position, the navigator advances the 0900 LOP along the DR track to 0930. The resulting position is called a:
- AFix
- BDead reckoning position
- CRunning fix✓ correct
- DEstimated position
Why C is correct
Bowditch Ch. 7 §702 defines a running fix as the position obtained by advancing an earlier LOP along the DR track to the time of a second observation when simultaneous LOPs cannot be taken. A fix requires two or more LOPs taken simultaneously per Bowditch Ch. 7 §701.
