USCG Exam Practice · Dead reckoning — DR plot maintenance
A navigator obtains a bearing on a lighthouse at 0900 and cannot obtain a second bearing simultaneously. The 0900 LOP is advanced along the DR track to 0930, when a second bearing is taken. The resulting position is called a:
- AFix
- BDead reckoning position
- CRunning fix✓ correct
- DEstimated position
Why C is correct
Bowditch Ch. 7 §702 defines a running fix as the position obtained when the first LOP is advanced along the DR track to the time of a second observation and the two LOPs are then intersected. A fix requires simultaneous LOPs per Bowditch Ch. 7 §701.
