USCG Exam Practice · Rule 12 — Sailing Vessels

  1. AVessel A, because she is the stand-on vessel
  2. BVessel B, because she has the wind on her port side✓ correct
  3. CVessel A, because she has the wind on her starboard side
  4. DNeither vessel; both must alter course to starboard

Why B is correct

Under 33 CFR §83.12(a)(i), when each sailing vessel has the wind on a different side, the vessel with the wind on the port side shall keep out of the way of the other. Vessel B has the wind on her port side and is therefore the give-way vessel.
