USCG Exam Practice · Rule 12 — Sailing Vessels
A sailing vessel of 18 meters is underway at night. She elects to use a combined lantern at the masthead instead of separate sidelights and sternlight. She also wishes to display the optional red-over-green all-round lights at the masthead. Which statement is correct under the Inland Rules?
- AShe may display both the combined lantern and the red-over-green lights simultaneously
- BShe may not display the combined lantern at all because she is over 12 meters
- CShe may not display the red-over-green all-round lights in conjunction with the combined lantern✓ correct
- DShe must display separate sidelights and sternlight because she is over 12 meters
Why C is correct
33 CFR §83.25(b) permits the combined lantern for sailing vessels less than 20 meters. However, §83.25(c) expressly states that the optional red-over-green all-round lights shall not be exhibited in conjunction with the combined lantern permitted by paragraph (b). The two systems are mutually exclusive.
