USCG Exam Practice · Rule 12 — Sailing Vessels

A sailing vessel less than 7 meters in length is underway at night and it is not practicable to exhibit sidelights and a sternlight. What does the Inland Rule require of her?

  1. AShe must exhibit two all-round lights, upper red and lower green, at the masthead
  2. BShe must exhibit an all-round white light or have ready at hand an electric torch or lighted lantern showing a white light, exhibited in sufficient time to prevent collision✓ correct
  3. CShe is exempt from all lighting requirements because of her size
  4. DShe must exhibit a combined lantern at or near the top of the mast

Why B is correct

33 CFR §83.25(d)(i) states that a sailing vessel under 7 meters shall, if practicable, exhibit the prescribed sidelights and sternlight, but if she does not, she shall exhibit an all-round white light or have ready at hand an electric torch or lighted lantern showing a white light exhibited in sufficient time to prevent collision. There is no blanket size exemption from all lighting requirements.
