USCG Exam PracticePassing distance and CPA from chart plot
A vessel's ARPA with only manual acquisition capability has been tracking a target for three minutes in steady-state conditions. The observer queries the system for alphanumeric data on that target. Which of the following data items is the ARPA required by IMO performance standards to provide immediately upon request?
- A. The target's predicted course after a trial maneuver by own ship
- B. The target's past track positions for the preceding 12 minutes
- ✓ The predicted target range at the closest point of approach (CPA)Correct
- D. The target's rate of turn
Why C is correct
33 CFR §164.38, Appendix A, paragraph 3.6.1 lists the alphanumeric data that must be immediately available on request, which includes predicted target range at CPA. Past track positions are required for at least eight minutes (not 12) per paragraph 3.3.5. Rate of turn is not listed among the required alphanumeric outputs. Trial maneuver simulation is a separate function under paragraph 3.7.
