USCG Exam PracticeThree-bearing fix and cocked-hat triangle
A three-bearing fix differs from a running fix primarily because a three-bearing fix:
- A. Uses depth soundings rather than visual bearings
- B. Requires advancing the first LOP along the DR track before plotting
- ✓ Takes all three lines of position simultaneouslyCorrect
- D. Can be obtained from a single charted object
Why C is correct
Bowditch Ch. 7 §705 defines a three-bearing fix as three simultaneous LOPs. A running fix, per §702 and §708, requires advancing an earlier LOP along the DR track because observations cannot be taken simultaneously.
