USCG Exam PracticeRunning fix from a single object
Between fixes in pilot waters, the navigator has only an estimated current of set 270°T, drift 1.5 knots available. The BEST position to plot is a(n):
- A. Fix, using the current vector as a line of position
- B. DR position advanced along the course line without current correction
- ✓ Estimated position derived from the DR position corrected for set and driftCorrect
- D. Running fix advanced by the current vector instead of the DR track
Why C is correct
Bowditch Ch. 8 §803 defines the estimated position (EP) as the DR position corrected for estimated set and drift, plotted as a dot inside a square. It is the best position available between fixes when only the current can be estimated.
