USCG Exam PracticeTides and currents — predictions and corrections
The vertical clearance under a fixed bridge will be LEAST when:
- A. A neap tide is in progress
- B. Slack water occurs at low tide
- ✓ The tide is at its highest predicted levelCorrect
- D. The tide is at its lowest predicted level
Why C is correct
Bridge heights are referenced to Mean High Water. As the tide rises toward or above MHW, the water surface approaches the bridge deck and vertical clearance decreases. Clearance is greatest at low water.
