Wyoming Boat Registration

Wyoming runs boat registration through the Game and Fish Department, not a DMV — but the ownership title comes from your county clerk first, so a motorized boat touches two agencies. Registration fees are flat, not length-based, and you can buy a 1-year or 3-year sticker. What makes Wyoming distinctive is the separate Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) decal: almost every watercraft that touches Wyoming water — including canoes, kayaks, and out-of-state boats that never register here — must display a current AIS decal before launching. Here is exactly how registration, county titling, HIN checks, fees, and the AIS decal fit together.

How to register a boat in Wyoming

  1. Get a county title first (motorized boats)

All motorized watercraft — including boats with only a trolling motor — must be titled before WGFD will register them. The title is issued by your county clerk, the same office that titles vehicles, and you must show proof that Wyoming sales tax was paid. A brand-new owner can operate on a notarized bill of sale for up to 30 days while the county title is obtained.

  2. Verify or obtain the HIN

Your boat needs a valid 12-character Hull Identification Number before titling. A watercraft that has never been titled in Wyoming may require a HIN inspection by a law-enforcement agency or a participating WGFD office to confirm the hull number. If the boat has no HIN, WGFD assigns a state HIN (a 'WYZ' number) at a regional office.

  3. Submit the watercraft registration application to WGFD

Bring the completed Wyoming Watercraft Registration Application, proof of ownership (a properly assigned Wyoming title, or for a previously registered out-of-state boat, the assigned out-of-state title or renewal notice), and the fee. You can register in person at any WGFD regional office or by mail; renewals can also be done online. Allow about 10 days by mail or online to receive your registration and decals.

  4. Display the WY number, validation decal, and AIS decal

Paint or apply the assigned registration ('WY') number on both sides of the forward half of the boat, with the validation decal alongside it. Registrations expire December 31 of the final year — the last two digits on the hull decal show the expiration year. Separately, motorized boats display the AIS decal on the starboard (right) side of the bow, six inches to the left of and in line with the registration decal.

  5. Buy the AIS decal before you launch

Independent of registration, almost every watercraft using Wyoming water must carry a current-calendar-year Aquatic Invasive Species decal before launching. Buy it on the WGFD website or from a license-selling agent; the purchase receipt lets you launch for a short window while the physical decal is mailed. Boats transported into Wyoming from March 1 to November 30 must also pass an AIS inspection before launching.

Wyoming registration fees

Wyoming charges a flat watercraft registration fee — it is not scaled by boat length like many states. You choose a 1-year or 3-year period, and you can bundle the resident motorized AIS decal into the registration price. The AIS decal itself is priced separately by residency and by motorized vs. non-motorized, and it is what an out-of-state boater who never registers in Wyoming actually pays. County title fees are extra and vary by county.

ClassVessel lengthBase fee
1-year registrationMotorized watercraft, registration only (no AIS decal)$30.00
1-year registration + AISMotorized watercraft, bundled with resident AIS decal$40.00
3-year registrationMotorized watercraft, registration only (no AIS decal)$80.00
3-year registration + AISMotorized watercraft, bundled with resident AIS decal$110.00
AIS decal — resident motorizedAnnual, per calendar year$10.00
AIS decal — nonresident motorizedAnnual, per calendar year$30.00
AIS decal — resident non-motorizedAnnual, per calendar year$5.00
AIS decal — nonresident non-motorizedAnnual, per calendar year$15.00

Registration fees are the same for residents and nonresidents; the AIS decal is where residency changes the price. County title fees and any sales/use tax are separate and vary by county. Confirm the current amounts on the WGFD license fee list before you pay.

Titling in Wyoming

Wyoming does title boats — but not through Game and Fish. Motorized watercraft must first receive a county-issued certificate of title from the county clerk (the same office that titles cars and trailers), with proof that Wyoming sales tax was paid. Only after the boat is titled does WGFD register it. Non-motorized craft — canoes, kayaks, sailboards, sailboats, and rowboats — are not titled or registered at all.

Federally documented vessels are the exception to state titling: because the U.S. Coast Guard Certificate of Documentation is the ownership record, a documented vessel is not separately state-titled. It can still fall under Wyoming's requirements when used on Wyoming water — a motorized documented boat is still subject to registration, and the AIS decal requirement applies to it like any other watercraft. This is the classic split explained in state registration vs USCG documentation; confirm the current handling of a documented hull with WGFD before you launch.

HIN requirements

Wyoming requires a valid 12-character Hull Identification Number (HIN) on every motorized boat it titles and registers. The HIN is a federal manufacturer requirement (on hulls built after 1972), while the registration 'WY' number is the state's equivalent of a license plate — the two are different identifiers and both must appear on the state registration certificate.

A boat that has never been titled in Wyoming — including out-of-state and newly purchased boats — may need a HIN inspection by a law-enforcement agency or a participating WGFD office to verify the hull number before the county will title it. Decode any existing hull number first with the HIN decoder so the manufacturer and model year on the plate match your paperwork.

If a boat has no HIN — a homemade hull or one where the number is missing — the owner applies at a local WGFD regional office and the Department assigns a state HIN beginning with 'WYZ' followed by consecutive numbers. The assigned HIN must be permanently affixed to the transom and shown on the registration certificate.

Renewal

Wyoming watercraft registrations are sold for a 1-year or 3-year period and expire at the end of the day on December 31 of the final year — the last two digits on the hull validation decal show the expiration year. This is a fixed calendar-year anchor, not a birthday-based cycle. Renew online, by mail, or in person at a WGFD office. The AIS decal is separate and is always valid only for the calendar year, so it must be renewed every year even if your multi-year registration is still current.

Exemptions

Non-motorized craft — canoes, kayaks, sailboards, sailboats, and rowboats — are exempt from Wyoming titling and registration. They are not, however, automatically exempt from the AIS decal: a non-motorized boat still needs a current AIS decal to launch, and only non-motorized inflatables 10 feet or shorter, all paddleboards, and water-sport toys are exempt from the AIS requirement.

Out-of-state boats registered elsewhere and not kept in Wyoming beyond 90 consecutive days do not need Wyoming registration, and U.S. government vessels are exempt. Reciprocity covers registration only — any motorized or covered watercraft visiting Wyoming water must still buy the AIS decal and, from March 1 to November 30, pass an AIS inspection before launching.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an AIS decal if my boat isn't registered in Wyoming?

Yes. The AIS (Aquatic Invasive Species) decal is separate from registration. Almost every watercraft using Wyoming water — including out-of-state boats, canoes, and kayaks that never register here — must display a current-calendar-year AIS decal before launching. Only non-motorized inflatables 10 feet or shorter, paddleboards, and water-sport toys are exempt. It costs $10 for a resident-owned motorized boat and $30 for a nonresident motorized boat ($5 / $15 non-motorized).

Does Wyoming title boats?

Yes, but through the county clerk, not Game and Fish. Every motorized boat must first get a county-issued title (with Wyoming sales tax paid) before WGFD will register it. Non-motorized craft — canoes, kayaks, sailboats, sailboards, rowboats — are neither titled nor registered. Federally documented vessels aren't state-titled because the Coast Guard document is the ownership record.

How much does it cost to register a boat in Wyoming?

Registration is a flat fee, not based on length: $30 for one year or $80 for three years, or $40 / $110 if you bundle in the resident motorized AIS decal. Nonresidents pay the same registration fee but a higher AIS decal ($30/year motorized). County title fees and sales tax are extra.

When does my Wyoming boat registration expire?

On December 31 of the final year of your 1-year or 3-year period — the last two digits on the hull decal show the year. Unlike some states there's no birthday-based expiration. Remember the AIS decal is annual, so it expires every December 31 regardless of a multi-year registration.

What if my boat has no HIN or came from out of state?

A boat never titled in Wyoming may need a HIN inspection by a law-enforcement agency or a participating WGFD office before the county will title it. If the hull has no HIN at all, WGFD assigns a state HIN (a 'WYZ' number) at a regional office, which is then affixed to the transom and shown on the registration certificate.
