Florida Captain's License

OUPV (Six-Pack) and Master credentials for charter operators in Florida.

TL;DR

Florida does not issue its own captain's license — the credential is the federal USCG OUPV or Master license. The nearest USCG Regional Examination Center is Miami, FL. Florida has by far the highest charter density in the country. REC Miami runs the federal exam; OUPV Near-Coastal is the standard entry credential for offshore reef and bluewater operators, with Master 100 common in the Keys and on the Gulf coast.

Path to the license

  1. Document at least 360 days of sea service — see our sea-time requirements guide. 90 of those must be within the last 3 years.
  2. Pass a USCG-approved physical (CG-719K) and drug test (CG-719P).
  3. Submit your application package to the National Maritime Center.
  4. Schedule and pass the written exam at REC Miami, FL, or at any USCG-approved third-party course that grants exam authority.
  5. Complete the TWIC card application and CPR/First Aid certification before the credential is issued.
